FISH SURVIVES 15 HOURS IN REFRIGERATORDORSET, England -- A freshly caught fish has survived for 15 hours in a fridge. Mike Reeves was amazed when he opened his fridge to cook the turbot which he had caught the day before. As he washed it under the tap he realized it was moving. He placed the fish in a sink of cold water and then phoned a nearby aquarium. Staff arrived and transferred the turbot, which they named Herbert, into a tank of saltwater. Herbert made a complete recovery and became a star attraction. Reeves was fishing on sands near his home in Christchurch, Dorset, when he reeled in the one-pound flatfish. "Normally, fish die within the first hour when they have been out of the water, but this had been out of the water for 15 hours," Reeves told the press. "Because it was still alive I didn't have the heart to eat it." Herbert is now at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth. According to marine fish expert Dr. Paul Gainey, "I expect that the time it was in the fridge slowed its metabolism, much like hibernation, and helped it survive. Also, it was in a plastic bag so it would have been in a moist environment, which is important." |
